Pest control is the process of managing, minimizing, or removing pests from spaces occupied by people. Pests can include insects, rodents, and other animals. Pest control is important for the safety of health, food, and property.

Pest control methods include:
  • Physical
Involves trapping, killing, or removing pests. This can also include putting up physical barriers to stop pests from returning. Physical methods are environmentally friendly and don’t involve dangerous chemicals. However, they’re time-consuming and not very reliable.
  • Chemical
Uses pesticides and rodenticides. Chemical methods are reliable and can tackle a large portion of the pest population. Most modern pesticides are tested and certified for safe levels of human exposure in very small amounts.
  • Fumigation
Treats structures by sealing them or surrounding them with an airtight cover and fogging with liquid insecticide.

Pest control can also involve handling a specific issue, often with a one-time application or treatment.

Pest control workers may perform the following duties:
  • Inspect buildings and premises for signs of pests or infestation
  • Determine the type of treatment needed to eliminate pests
  • Measure the dimensions of the area needing treatment
  • Estimate the cost of their services
  • Use baits and set traps to remove, control, or eliminate pests
Pest control can be handled by a licensed pest professional. Before using a pest control service, it’s a good idea to ask about the company’s licenses, such as Surat Izin Usaha Perdagangan (SIUP) and Nomor Pokok Wajib Pajak (NPWP).
